EARLIEST RECORDED(?) VILLAGE MARKING - BOXED "SOUILLAC" DS ON COVER WITH BOXED "INL[AND]"; Small 17 Feb. 1848 EL (address-panel neatly reinforced to stop ink-etching) sent unpaid from "SOUILLAC." - fine boxed "FE 17 1848" ds nicely placed on the front beside a partial boxed Port Louis "INL[AND]" mark (1st recorded month of usage); charged "2d" local rate. This is thought to be the earliest recorded usage of any Mauritius village mark (Proud D1; earliest recorded for this village by him). Important Exhibition Item.
