A JAPANESE CONTEMPORARY LACQUER TEA CADDY (NATSUME), of broad squat form, decorated on the outside with butterflies hovering among trailing vine on a natural wood grain ground. The interior and base of the caddy is lacquered, and the inside of the lid is lacquered with three chidori (dotterels or plovers) in flight above spumy waters, presented in a wooden box with an inscribed label to the exterior and a further inscription and stamp inside the cover, caddy height 6.5 cm x width 8.8 cm
General surface wear commensurate with age. There is a small mark or imperfection inside the caddy with an indentation to the rim. Two hairline cracks lead away from the cover rim over the gilt lacquer decoration, visible on both sides. Small indentations to the cover rim. There is a mark or imperfection to the lacquer on the base approx. 1 cm long. The presentation box has a break to two panels on opposite sides. One break has evidence of adhesive used to restore this split in the wood.
