John Michael Williams (British, 1710 - c.1780): ‘Dr Samuel Johnson’, a half-length Georgian portrait, wearing a white shirt and tie, black frock coat, and gold waistcoat, oil on canvas, 65 by 62cm, in a good gilt frame with outset corners centred by applied four petalled flowers, with past lot number ‘693SS’ stencilled to stretcher, and white chalk marks, an applied paper label with armorial crest above the name ‘Bond’, hand inscribed in pencil ‘Dr Samuel Johnson 1754’, and an applied gilt plaque hand inscribed in black felt pen ‘Dr Samuel Johnson by John Mich. Williams 1754’, 94 by 81.5cm.
