Stainless-steel giant Columbus Stainless dates back to 1966 (two years after ferrochrome producer RMB Alloys started up in Middelburg), when Southern Cross became South Africa’s first stainless-steel producer. It later became Middelburg Steel and Alloys (MS&A), which produced ferrochrome and stainless steel. In 1991, the MS&A operation was taken over by the Columbus Joint Venture (Samancor, Highveld Steel & Vanadium and the Industrial Development Corporation), trading as Columbus Stainless. In September 1995 the plant was expanded, making Columbus one of the world’s most modern and largest single-site stainless-steel producers at that time.
