An Egyptian/Sudanese silver box, inscribed and dated 1915. The top translates as 'Saray of Khartoum 10th February 1915', the base translates as 'Khartoum Al-Kareem year of 1915, height 5cm, width 10cm, depth 10cm. Footnote: The word used for February is the anglicized word as opposed to the Islamic. Saray means 'Town Hall Government Building and in the case of Khartoum refers to the Republican Palace which was the centre of government when Sudan was jointly governed by the British and the Egyptians. Al-Kareem is potentially a family name (perhaps of the maker) or an honorific (its sometimes used as a greeting in relation to Ramadan 'Ramadan Al-Kareem, Noble Ramadan' but can be applied to a person 'The noble .'.
