Herta Rössle was a German painter and graphic artist of Expressive Realism. She first took private painting and drawing lessons with Albrecht Leo Merz in Stuttgart. From 1924 to 1931 she studied with Arnold Waldschmidt, Hans Spiegel, Robert Breyer and Heinrich Altherr at the Stuttgart Art Academy. She was a member of the Stuttgart Secession, founded in 1929. From 1933 to 1938 she was in Munich. During the National Socialist era she was banned from exhibiting. From 1939 to 1945 she worked as a nurse's aide for the German Red Cross. From 1966 to 1972 she was chairwoman of the Association of Women Artists of Württemberg. Herta Rössle is considered an important representative of Expressive Realism, which combined the "coloristic achievements of Impressionism with the freedom of color and form of Expressionism".
