Hallmarked to the base; very clear; maker’s mark of WE for William Egan, date letter along with ‘Sword of Light’ mark for the year 1966. Total weight: 757grams/24.3 troy ounces.
What is a ‘strawberry dish’ – it is exactly what it seems; a dish for displaying strawberries; originally the dish would have been placed on dining table displaying fruit. The style of dish remains very popular as it can be used for many purposes – and for displaying as a piece of silver art in itself.
More About The Maker: The firm of Egan Jewellers & Silversmiths had a very long & distinguished history in the city of Cork. Founded by William Egan in the 1820s on the Grand Parade. They later moved onto Patrick Street in 1876 where the company would remain for 110 years. Their store was burned in the Burning of Cork in 1920 and they rebuilt opening a new store on the site in 1925. During the Civil War of 1922, they produced silver which was assayed by the firm itself; this silver is known as Republican Silver and is now extremely rare & valuable. Examples can be seen in the Cork Public Museum – Fitzgerald’s Park.
