A contemporary (1818) document relating to the knighthood conferred on Lt.-Col. Edward Miles by John VI, King of Portugal. The document is an unsigned translation and reads:

Edward Miles, Lieut-Colonel of the 38th Regiment of the Army of His Britannic Majesty - I the King send you my greetings, and wishing to honour you by giving you a further testimony of my Royal munificence, have been pleased to do you the favor to name you a Knight of the Tower and Sword, enfavoring you from this time to wear the Insignia of a Knight which I think proper to communicate to you for your information - Written at the Palace of Rio de Janeiro on the twenty-seventh of November in the year 1818 - Signed King

Together with the September 14 1820 edition of The Government Gazette - Madras (Volume XIX) in which it is announced that permission is granted to Lieut.-Col Edward Miles C.B. to accept and wear the Insignia of a Knight of the Royal Portuguese Military Order of the Tower and Sword conferred upon him by the King of Portugal in testimony to his great courage and intrepidity during the Peninsular War.
