Tanoa Kava Bowl, Samoa / Fiji islands. Carved and engraved hardwood. Kava is drunk both casually and ceremonially. Regular bowls, such as the present example, have six legs, while large ceremonial bowls have eight or ten legs. A cord is passed through the projecting lug to hang the bowl when not in use. Approx 39cm diameter. PROVENANCE John Magers Collection, Sydney.
