Austrian landwehrulanen (Lancer) Regiment 5 Officer's Chapka. A rare example, with glazed black leather skull and peak, the latter edged with gold embroidery. Two rows of gold "Austrian" pattern lace at top of skull, covering the join with the purple cloth which forms a small square top edged along the corners with gold "Heavy Russia" braid. A large ornate brass front plate in the form of a Crown above a double-headed eagle bearing a shield on the breast incised with numeral 5. The black horsehair plume connected to the top of the cap by a narrow chain. Ornate brass (originally gilt) chin-scales secured by lion's head bosses. Pale roan leather internal headband and pleated cream silk lining. The square top requires strengthening, remains attached.
