A 1914 TRIO TO A CASUALTY WITH THE ROYAL MARINES LIGHT INFANTRY. A Great War Trio comprising 1914 Star with '5th Aug-22nd Nov 1914' clasp named to PLY 16348 Pte L. Hayward R.M.Brigade, War Medal and Victory Medal similarly named to Hayward with the R.M.L.I. Lot Hayward was born in West Coker near Yeovil on the 11th November 1895 to Walter and Mary Hayward of Rosedale Cottages, Manor Street West Coker. The seventh of eight children he worked as a farm labourer before his service, he enlisted in Exeter on the 18th August 1913 serving with the Plymouth Battalion at the Defence of Dunkirk and Antwerp in September and October 1914. He later served with the Royal Marines Brigade as part of the MEF, hospitalised due to illness in Alexandria from the 3rd May 1915 he was not present at 'Y' beach but rejoined the Plymouth Battalion at Cape Helles from the 17th May to the 25th February 1916. From the 7th April 1916 he remained in the UK to train on a gunnery course. He died on the 18th of November 1917 after being discharged on the 16th of June 1917 due to poor health, the cause of death being of Pulmonary Tubercle. He is buried at West Coker Parish Church where he is also listed on the War Memorial. It seems that his grave was not recognised by the Commonwealth War Graves until 16th June 2004.
Records suggest the Star was issued to his Father but the clasp was not iriginally claimed by the family. Medals with light polish, mounted for display in glazed frame.
