A collection of mid 18thC British County Maps printed for Carington Bowles, probably from their 1767 edition of the 'Large English Atlas', engraved by Bowen, Kitchin or Searle, with contemporary hand colour, all sectionalised and laid onto linen and contained within publisher's marbled slip cases with paper label title and series no., this collection being 37 (out of 47 in total) and two duplicates (Buckingshire, no.6 and Yorkshire West Riding. no. 43), each sheet approx. 520mm x 730 with some variation, the outer slip cases also with slight variation in size (39)
Provenance; The Alan Winning Collection of Antiquarian Maps, Books and Atlases. Beginning in the 1970’s with an interest in the 19th Century development of the railway network and the County Maps of this period that charted it, Alan expanded his academic interest into good early printed maps, town plans, travel guides, books and atlases and has been adding to his collection over the past 50 years.
