Two mixed media on paper mounted on board artwork by Joseph O'Connor. Both are overlaid on newspapers, one the Telegraph from Jul 11 1961 and the other The Times October 7 1961. Both features studies of cafe scenes, including figures sitting and interacting, reading a newspaper etc. Direct from the artist studio, these works have some losses but are excellent examples of preparatory studies for the artist larger works and very rare to market. Joseph Dominic O’Connor studied medicine at UCD before turning to art at the National College of Art and Design, and then later Regent Street Polytechnic and Chelsea School of Art in London, the latter of which he received a scholarship for in 1962. O’Connor exhibited sporadically throughout his long artistic career, at the David Hendriks Gallery, the Project Gallery Dublin, the Peppercannister Gallery and more notably with the Independent Artist group (of whom he was an original member), the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and the Royal Hibernian Academy. His work is now held in a number of collections including The Ulster Museum, IMMA, The Arts Council of Ireland and the Office of Public Works.
