A Jaques London red and white ivory 2¾" Staunton chess set, c.1850, with original Carton Pierre casket, 8.25 x 6 x 4in.
CONDITION: Casket a little worn, lid is almost completely detached, chipped and broken away at the front right corner, castellations around the top are broken away at the corners, what looks to be the original red fabric showing through is now very faded and split, green baize to the underside is later, interior with purple velvet looks original with original tooled gilt black leather banding around the inside of the lid.
Red - overall a little faded in places with one or two tiny spots where the white of the ivory is showing through, one knight with crown stamp to head, one castle with crown stamp to top, one pawn with tiny chip to collar, another pawn looks to have had its finial reattached and another pawn has a replacement composition finial.
White - one bishop with chip to foot rim, one knight with black crown stamp to head, one castle with black crown stamp to top, one pawn with tiny chip to foot ring, all white pieces with a rather grubby appearance.
Comes with an old card and leather folding chess board, 15.75 x 8in. when closed.
