A fine George III 22ct gold and enamel mourning ring, the band with milled edge and white enamel band within black lined borders, inscribed 'JOHN.WHITEHEAD.WARRE.OB14.SEP.1804.AET.15', the inside of the band inscribed 'Perished in sight of his Parents, the Wye off Cold Well', hallmarked William Hunter II, London, ring size T½, in the original red morocco leather box. * A memorial marks the site of this tragic event, along the banks of the river Wye in the Wye Valley, near Coppett Hill and Welsh Bicknor, Herefordshire. A copy of the a photograph of the memorial and a copy of the inscription from the memorial is included with the lot. The ring appears to have been kept in the box since it was made and remains in very fine condition, with no damage or wear whatsoever. The box is in good condition, with some wear to the edges on the morocco and from the catch.
