English smoothbore percussion cavalry carbine with sling bar and swivel ramrod intended for issue to Indian Mounted Police. Based upon the East India Pattern 1856 rifled cavalry carbine, this smoothbore variant was adopted in 1858 and incorporates a fixed rear sight instead of the P1856 multi-leaf rear sight. Dated 1861 with Enfield and VR markings, barrel length 21", Cal/bore 16 Bore / .65 Cal. Note: .656 Cal so it could not be fire the British Army .577 which had caused so much trouble in the Mutiny just before these were issued, swivel ram rod to prevent dropping on horseback. A scarce variant in overall GC. Obsolete Calibre, No Licence required.
