Early in Southgate's career he spent time at the Bideford School of Art in North Devon which is close to the suggested wreck site.

Provenance from the vendor:

"I was given this painting by my father in 1973 to furnish my first home.

He had an antique shop called Quaintways, in the High Street, Wells-next-the-Sea in the late 1960’s. He purchased this painting in 1968 “off the wall” from the then occupant of Wingate, Two Furlong Hill, Wells-next-the-Sea.
Wingate was Frank Southgate’s Norfolk home at the time of his death.

The vendor told my father the painting was hanging in the property when they had moved in, she believed it was left behind when Ethel, Frank’s wife moved out after he was killed and to the best of her knowledge, it had remained hanging in the same place ever since.".
