In February 1923, George Augustus Moore's house in Ireland was burnt down by IRA 'irregulars'. Shaken by this event and dismayed at modern day Ireland, Moore looked to an earlier time, when the country was covered by great forests, when people travelled by foot, and story-tellers abounded. One result of this desire for the past was Ulick and Soracha, a historical romance set during the period of Edward Bruce's attempt to liberate Ireland in 1315
