G.D. Esposito, Maltese School 19th Century"H.M.S. Undaunted," O.O.C., depicting an Orlando-class armoured cruiser on the open sea, approx. 59cms x 89cms (23" x 35") signed and dated lower right, with inscribed "G.D. Esposito 1893", with inscribed gilt mount, oak frame. (1)úHMS Undaunted was launched in 1886 and was sold for scrapping in 1907. Beresford was appointed her commander in December 1889 and served with her as part of the Mediterranean Fleet until he returned to England in 1893. On 21 March 1893, while under his command, she struck rocks on leaving Alexandria harbour, owing to an error by the ship's navigation officer, who gave the order to turn to port instead of starboard; she suffered minor underwater damage. Both Beresford and his staff commander were court-martialled; Beresford was honourably acquitted, the staff commander reprimanded and cautioned.
