An amalgamation of the Ellesmere and Chester Canal, the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, and the Shrewsbury and Montgomery Canal. Formed to build three separate railway lines (over existing canal routes) covering 155 miles and providing numerous connections with the London and North Western Railway. Only one line was built between Shrewsbury and Stafford. EF.
