Banknotes - Bradbury treasury notes issued during WWI in the sums of £1 and 10/-, good condition, though laid down to board with remains of a former frame. These were some of the first banknotes to be issued. They were issued at a time when the Government feared that the public would hoard the gold sovereigns and half sovereigns at a time when Europe was in crisis. As a result, it was decided to issue paper money to the same value of £1 and 10/-. The notes were printed on paper that was earmarked for the printing of stamps, and printed on one side only, and were 'signed' by the then Chief Cashier at the Bank of England, John Bradbury
