Edward Henry Gordon Craig CH OBE (British, 1872-1966) - A series of six early 20th century woodblock prints on paper after Sheakespeare's Hamlet with personalised hand written dedication from the artist to Sidney Bernstein for his Phoenix Theatre.
The series to include theatre characters from Hamlet, including the Bird Dancer, Hamlet, Hamlet & his Demon & more. All signed and dated in pecil to base of characters. Five dated 1912 and one 1927. All mounted framed and glazed.
The dedication letter reading: ' Offered to Sidney Bernstein to his Phoenix Theatre in admiration for his act in bringing The Habima (Vachtangor's actors) to London. January 1st 1931 ' with signature. Mounted framed & glazed.
Edward Henry Gordon Craig CH OBE (born Edward Godwin; 16 January 1872 – 29 July 1966), was an English modernist theatre practitioner; he worked as an actor, director and scenic designer, as well as developing an influential body of theoretical writings.
Sidney Lewis Bernstein, Baron Bernstein (30 January 1899 – 5 February 1993) was a British businessman and media executive who was the founding chairman of the London-based Granada Group and the founder of the Manchester-based Granada Television in 1954. Granada was one of the original four ITA franchises.
Acquired by current owner at the ITV Charity Staff Auction on Friday 16th December 2005.
The series of woodblocks and dedication were donated, through a series of companies' acquisitions, to ITV.
