** BRISTOL - LETTER EX FRANCE TO EMIGREE ON PAROLE WITH "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR"; 16 May 1812 EL (sealed with wafer, with some stains; from a group of friends intent upon facilitating the addressee's return to France) from "L[oudeac]" to "M Le Verger To the Care of Revd. Mr. Plowden, Bristol" charged "10[d]" with mainly fine oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR" on the front and significantly endorsed "French Parole" in red on the front (there is a London cds of 2 Sept. 1812 on the flap). The addressee was an emigre from France in 1793 who stayed in Britain to help the Catholic Priest in Bristol until the latter's retirement (?) in 1815. This is thought to be a Unique cover to an Emigre on parole, and the only cover recorded to a Parole prisoner in Bristol.
