λ A magnificent ivory and lace fan sculpted, carved and signed by Alfred Jorel, ornately carved with flowers and cherubs to the guards, the sticks intricately carved and pierced with a trailing floral, foliate, bird and insect design leading to a carved and painted central cartouche depicting a courting couple, the carving extends over the edges of the sticks to form a design when closed, the leaf made of fine Point de Gaze lace, length 29cm
note: Jorel was a student of the sculptor Jean Carlus, he crafted bronze, ivory and chryselephantine statuettes, as well as Art Nouveau and Art Deco ivory jewellery, many of Jorel's characters depict children in everyday situations, but he also depicts religious themes, he became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1896 and exhibited at the salons of the company, here he was awarded a bronze medal in 1907, Alfred Jorel was the father of the painter Alfred Jorel junior, who painted views of Paris in the 20th century and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Paris
