BWM & Victory Medal to 2.Lieut R E E Chaplin. Plus Death Plaque, Scroll, to Rowland Edward Ernest Chaplin. Killed In Action 22/4/1917 with 7th Field Coy RE. Lived Hampstead. Buried London Cemetery, Neuville-Vitasse. Group mounted in superb wooden frame, Plaque loose. An extract from Wykehamists who died in the war note that he was born 1896 and came to Winchester from "Lindisfarne" Blackheath. He was Prefect of Chapel in 1914-15 and won the Richardson Prize for Mathematics and the School Science Prize. He was elected in 1914 to a Scholarship in Mathematics at Clare College, Cambridge, and two months after leaving Winchester was gazetted to the RE. Chaplin is mentioned in Lt General Sir John Bagot Glubbs diary (Glubb Pasha of the Arab Legion) published in 1977, Chaplins unit was near Wancourt preparing for the attack and "just as dawn was breaking, the Sappers were putting the finishing touches to the dressing stations, and Chaplin was standing besides the shelter superintending. As often happened at dawn, the Boche put down a light artillery barrage and a shell fell right into the little group of them. It burst close to Chaplins head and killed in instantly".
