The rectory for the sixteenth century Church of St. Mary's, Newington Butts stood near the Church and Churchyard of St.Mary's on the west side of Newington Butts. The rectory gardens were said to have been surrounded by ditches, which extended out to the adjoining St.George's Fields.
Little is known of the artist's early life but he received an award from the Society of Arts as early as 1784. He was a member in 1799 of a sketching society of young artists in London which included Thomas Girtin and Louis Francia. Later he exhibited at The Royal Academy and The British Institution from 1785-1823. He was also one of the earliest workers in lithography.
