Dutch cargo vessel or fluyt, The Schiedam, wrecked off Gunwalloe, Cornwall 1684 17th century copper barrel hoops Three hoops, approximately 39.5cm in diameter. Schiedam was built as a Dutch East India flyboat, and in a short but eventful career was captured first by Moroccan pirates, then the Royal Navy who commissioned her as a transport ship. She was lost off Gunwalloe cove in 1684 with a cargo of tools, cannon and horses returning to England following the military’s evacuation of the Tangier Settlement in Morocco. The marble pieces in SHC’s collection may be parts of fireplaces and other architectural elements salvaged from demolished buildings in Tangier and intended for reuse, while the large number of barrel hoops and axe head indicate the large quantity of stores carried.
