A prison letter written by Bronisław Czech (prisoner number 349, born 25th July 1908) from Auschwitz Concentration Camp. The letter is addressed to Ms. Czechowa Stainisława and was sent from K.L. Auschwitz, East Block 24.
During World War II, Bronisław was a soldier of the Polish Underground (Home Army) and a courageous courier operating between occupied Poland and the West. He was arrested by the Gestapo, imprisoned, and ultimately murdered at Auschwitz.
While at Auschwitz, Bronisław was forced to work in the crematorium and clean the quarters of the German officers. He endured relentless beatings from the SS camp guards, leaving him in a severely weakened state by the time of his death on 5th June 1944, at the age of just 36.
In addition to his harrowing experiences as a prisoner, Bronisław was also a talented Polish sportsman and artist. A gifted skier, he excelled in various disciplines, including Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, and ski jumping, winning championships in all. He proudly represented Poland at three consecutive Winter Olympics and was a pioneer in mountain rescue in the Tatra Mountains, as well as a glider instructor.
This lot is accompanied by a tribute written in 2008 by Ian Nutley, honoring the legacy of Bronisław Czech.
