£400 - £600
Military interest - A rare South Wales Borderers military embroidery commemorating the amalgamation of the 2nd Warwickshire Regiment and the South Wales Borderers in 1881, the embroidery with central soldier figure, flanked by regimental flags and battle honours, to include Rorke's Drift, etc, the top with 2nd Warwickshire badge and beneath South Wales Borderers banner, the bottom with poignant 'forget me not' flowers, each corner with flower sprays, purple ground, 23 x 22in. (58½ x 56cm.). * At the beginning of the 19th century the two regiments were separate, by the 1880's the Warwickshire Regt had lost many men in various battles, the War Office amalgamated the Warwickshire Regt and their nearest neighbours, the South Wales Borders in 1881. ** Both regiments served at garrison in Guernsey during the 19th century and Guernseymen served in two of the battles named in the S. W. Borderers battle honours. *** The vendor has been collecting embroideries of this kind for 50 years and this is by far the best example she has ever come across.
* Excellent condition with very bright colour.
