attributed to Thomas Butterworth (British, 1768-1828), Burning the hulk. oil on canvas, unsigned, 19th century swept frame, later gold painted. 10¾ x 15½in. (27.3 x 39.4cm.). Relined. Scattered retouches when examined under UV, with some strengthening around the hulk and heavier retouching to the dark area of the sky to the left side of the canvas, where there is also some evidence of old craquelure to the paint surface in the dark areas. The varnish has started to matt unevenly, so the picture would probably benefit from cleaning and re-varnishing by a professional. The frame has been later overpainted dull gold and has minor losses.
