The following lots are from the studio of the late Paul Barry Hardcastle (1949-2021).
He was a ceramicist and sculptor based in Hallbankgate, Cumbria. Originally from York, he studied under Robert Brumby before taking Ceramics at Farnham art college, Surrey.
Paul's work, which also included drawings, paintings, stained glass and textiles was exhibited and commissioned at galleries and venues across the UK including Tullie House, Newcastle Theatre Royale, the Metro Centre and Unity Theatre Liverpool.
A keen scientist, he helped develop the firing processes for ceramic parts at Precision Products, Alston and this love of chemistry helped him create the glazes for his brightly coloured mosaics.
African art was a strong influence on his work, and from 1990 he spent long periods in Gambia, Senegal and Kenya working with local artists including the batik artist Queen Amie Coulibally.
A larger than life character, known for his physical stature and booming laugh, he featured on numerous occasions in the Cumberland News, and was widely respected by his peers as a unique figure in northern arts, and a mentor for many.
