RICHARD WESTALL R.A. (1765-1836). 'The Country Dowager', watercolour, 24 x 18in. Exhibited Royal Academy, London. 1801, The watercolour accompanied by a related engraving of the same subject (with composition in reverse) after the original work. The print was engraved and published by Richard Westall himself and was issued in a limited edition of 'The Lounger', a literary magazine that was published for some years from the 1780's onwards. Born in Hereford, Westall was apprenticed to a heraldic engraver who worked in Cheapside, London. Later Westall studied at the Royal Academy Schools where he developed his talents and became a friend of the fellow student Sir Thomas Lawrence. Westall was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1792, and two years later a full academician
