Two late 18th century fans, the first with slender wood monture, the guards painted red and gilded, with bone thumb guards, the double paper leaf painted with two elegant ladies in simple, trailing gowns speaking to a travelling salesman, the reserves delicately painted with flowers, the verso with simple floral sprays, guard approx. 27 cm; together with a carved and pierced bone fan, cream silk leaf, a central cartouche engraved and coloured featuring a couple in Roman robes, two winged cherubs present, one holding a flaming torch, the other, on the plinth, being crowned with flowers, with at either side a vignette , to the right featuring a couple accompanied by a winged cherub with flaming torch, to the left two young ladies teasing Cupid, holding his bow high beyond his reach, and three further images, one showing a lady finely dressed with ruched gown and flowing feathers trimming her hat, one featuring a man carrying two children, and a further image depicting two figures drawing water from a fountain, these and the reserves embroidered with tiny silver sequins, the verso plain, guard approx. 27 cm (2)
The first fan has red thread wound around the lower section of the lower guard, unable to examine the reason but possibly a repair just down from the shoulder. The leaf is rubbed on the folds and has previous crude repairs seen on the verso. One further central fold split.
The bone fan has damage, both guards have one inner stick stuck to them, the lower guard has a break at the shoulder, and the leaf is splitting centrally on the lower border
