A Sevres cup, tasse a chocolat 'AB', c1820, painted by [Abraham] Constantin, signed, with Louis XVIII, King of France, in dark blue frock coat, gold epaulettes with crown, the blue moire sash of the Order of St Esprit and badge of the Legion d'Honneur, flanked by the finely gilt device of the crown on a cushion and royal L's cypher framed by formal foliage, the gilt handle and interior highly burnished, 12.3cm h, incised 9 n 4 (date mark for 1815 followed by 4 for month of April), H and fd, blue Sevres mark
Comparative literature: de Bellaigue (Sir Geoffrey) - French Porcelain in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen 2009, vol III, No 296, pp.1033-1036 for the cerise ground example purchased by Francois Benois for George IV from the manufactory on 18 October 1825 at a cost of 400 francs. The portrait is based on an engraving by Jean-Louis Potrelle after Francois Gerard's portrait painted in 1814.
