EARLIEST KNOWN(?) USAGE OF THE "M" CANCEL - ONE OF TWO KNOWN 12 SEPT. 1857 COVERS - TO GREECE; 12 Sept. 1857 EL from Malta (blue oval firm's cachet on front) to Athens "Via Messina - Vap. Franc." with GB 1d Red 'Stars' (horiz. Strip of Three; JA-JC) tied by remarkably clear (First Day?) Malta barred "M" cancels with red crayon "10" on the front and mainly fine large "MALTA" cds backstamp. [We have recorded one other "M" cover of this same date; in the George Coates Collection of Nov. 1990, which had 3 1d Reds going to Naples.] Rare thus.
