QSA 5 clasps Cape Colony, OFS, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 to 4878 Pte A.W. Penfold 2nd Dragoon Gds good very fine. Alfred Penfold was severely wounded in the action at Leeuwkop on 1st April 1902 where the regiment was engaged by a large Boer force outnumbering the regiment 4 to 1, during a mainly night time action. The regiment suffered 15 killed and 62 men wounded and 120 horses were killed or wounded.
With copied service papers, casualty list, roll and regimental history, he was born in Ewell, London, enlisted 23/8/99, served South Africa 16/11/01 to 28/11/02, discharged 22/6/03 been found medically unfit for further service, clasps confirmed. (R)
