Under the impact of the war, Gassler turned increasingly to melancholic depictions and developed in the direction of New Objectivity. Between 1925 and 1927, Gassler lived in Paris and traveled to Italy, southern France, Prague, Vienna, and Carlsbad. From 1947 he lived in Carlsbad and created designs for porcelain, glass, murals and stage sets for Moser and Czech workshops. From 1928 to 1939 he was a member of the Vienna Secession and then of the Künstlerhaus. After the Second World War Gassler moved to Vienna. Preferred subjects were still lifes, portraits and landscapes. He created numerous frescoes in Bohemia and Moravia and designed stage sets for the theater in Karlovy Vary. Works in the Austrian Gallery Belvedere, among others.
