1818/9 ORIGIN OF POSTAGE STAMPS - RARE ORIGINAL SARDINIA P.O. NOTICE WITH BLUE "CAVALLINI" STAMPS; 3 Dec. 1818 4-page printed "MANIFESTO CAMERALE" Notice (19 x 29.2 cms. max.; the two pages separated and folded for display on a single album-sized sheet) printed in Turin having superb strikes of the three Cavallini marks in blue (light crease) on the back page; circular 15c (light stain), oval 25c and octagonal 50c, with text explaining (in Italian) how the marks were to be used as a Tax on letters sent outwith the Post Office system by private means. Most unusually with contemporary manuscript endorsement in Italian on the front stating that it was "Published on the 1st January 1819...". Important Historical document telling the story of these famous "Cavallini" forerunners of postage stamps.
