A LATE 17TH CENTURY WEST COUNTRY OAK COFFER, with a three panel lid with pin hinges, the front with a deep top frieze carved with stylised tulip and foliate decoration against a textured ground with punched decoration, and three panels carved with plant-like motifs within circles, divided by decorated uprights, with traces of original dark staining to backgrounds, 61cm high, 124cm wide. An email to the vendor from Nick Humphrey and the Victoria and Albert museum suggests a West Country origin for this chest.
