AN ANTIQUE HAND CARVED JAPANESE TAGUA NUT NETSUKE, in the form of a fish, signed to side. Intricately carved, highly detailed piece, the fins at the base act as a stand. The Tagua tree is a palm tree which grows in sub-tropical climates. Its oval shaped fruit is called a Tagua nut. The tagua nut has a similar colour, patina and hardness to elephant ivory, hence why it is sometimes referred to as ‘vegetable ivory’. Dimensions: 4.5cm x 4.3cm high approx.
