HENRY SCOTT TUKE, RA, RWS (1858-1929). SHIPPING AT ANCHOR IN A SQUALL, FALMOUTH. Oil on canvas 29 x 59.5cm. * Tuke owned a floating studio, the `Julie of Nantes`, an old French brigantine which he moored off the Greenbank in Falmouth harbour. It is possible that this subject was painted from that studio. Tuke loved to paint the intricacies of a fully rigged barque and, having been brought up with a ready familiarity with such vessels, he could paint many of them from memory. Falmouth was a deep-water harbour, constantly busy with square-rigged sailing ships, with access to and from the waterway known as the Carrick Roads (`Karrek Reun` in Cornish).
Lined; scattered retouching.
