Autograph', [Philadelphia, for the author, 1888], number 548 of 600 copies printed for the author's personal use signed by Whitman ("Walt Whitman") beneath text on the printed title page of Leaves of Grass, and with the limitation statement added in manuscript by Horace Traubel, Whitman's literary executor and biographer "Edition: six hundred Number five hundred forty-eight", Photographic title-page with oval profile portrait (Linton engraving after G.C. Potter photograph), tissue guarded engraved portrait of Whitman as a young man (used as frontispiece in the 1855 Leaves) bound in at p.28, from the Maynard and Outram Smith Library, with unobtrusive circular inkstamp to FFEP and reference number at foot of spine, and J. Outram Smith signature on front pastedown. Rev. Herbert Maynard Smith (1869-1949) was a member of the Anglican clergy and a published author on theological and historical subjects as well as the writer of a series of detective novels. Rev. J. Outram Smith (1871-1954) followed his older brother into the clergy and maintained a special interest in missionary work. Original polished buckram gilt, top edge gilt. The definitive edition of Whitman's work issued in his lifetime, published just three years before his death.
