A fine and rare Elizabeth I oak, sycamore, penwork and polychrome-decorated tester bed, circa 1570 and later
Complete with custom-made bed hangings
The cornice carved with half-flower filled lunettes over dentil mouldings, the tester having a prominent recessed central panel, within a dentil and punch-decorated frame, the panel lattice-carved with eight-pointed stars (chequer-stained) and fleur-de-lys, centred by a short pendant, flanked by sycamore panels of the same design executed in penwork, each corner recessed panel carved with a knot-pattern with leafy-tendril terminals, their design repeated, in penwork, on paired central sycamore panels, the headboard with a sycamore panel, again designed in penwork, with back and red stain, having paired delightful angel masks, winged, and issuing Tudor roses, carnations, hops and strawberries, centred and spaced by leaf-carved corbels, atop lambrequin and pierced, rounded and leaf-carved dentil mouldings, atop two penwork Nonsuch panels, each within a carved arcade, centred and flanked by figural terms, one male to centre and a female to each end, topped by pendant fruits, with naked torso, and strapwork pedestal, the centre decorated with jewel-like colours, satyr-carved ears, over a lunette-carved cushion rail and three plain panels, each end post with gadrooned and fluted baluster-turning, centred by a cup-and-cover, the plinth bases carved with a lozenge within an arch to three-sides, deep rails, 170cm wide, 214cm long, 214.5cm high
