This Farthing was produced by Heaton and Sons, a firm later known as the Birmingham Mint. Ralph Heaton II founded this prolific privately owned mint struck coinage for various territories across the expanding British Empire, initially using coining equipment purchased from Matthew Boulton's defunct Soho Mint. From 1874, the Royal Mint, experiencing high demand, outsourced the minting of domestic copper coinage, including Pennies, Halfpennies and Farthings to Heaton. These coins bear a tiny 'H' mintmark below the date to indicate their origins.
