Harry Powell for James Powell and Sons, Whitefriars, an Arts and Crafts silver and cork decanter stopper, assayed for Asher Solovitch, London 1902, planished cylindrical collar form with embossed tear drops, flat ogee top with ball knop and radiating drops, original central cork, 8.5cm long, 1.94ozt Note: The use of in-house designed silver stoppers and mounts on glass made by Powell first appeared in the 1899 Arts and Crafts exhibition, and was likely the direct result of having previously made the glass for established silversmiths and designers such as C R Ashbee and the Guild of Handicraft. The design of this stopper was used on several glass bottles, in different sizes, including Roman and Dutch inspired examples and the Minerbi drinking service. Powell did not register their own hallmark until October 1903, instead using the assay marks of local silversmiths for pieces made before that date. See: Jackson, L. 1996, Whitefriars Glass, Richard Dennis, pp.62, 63, 104 and 107, figs.156 and 158, pls.32 and 44, and Evans, W et al, 1995, Whitefriars Glass, Museum of London, p.88 fig.91, for examples of this stopper design in use on different vessels
