WW2 RAF Pilots Logbook & Badges.
This small group of items represent the early flying career of Flying Officer James Leyburn Murphy, who is believed to flown operationally with 161 Special Duties Squadron. Comprising: Pilots logbook, this covering a period January 1942 to September 1943. This log records training only. ... RAF Pilot Wings.... Uniform Medal ribbons. .... Copy photographs of F/O Murphy in uniform. ... etc. Overall GC . . . .Flying Officer James Leyburn Murphy volunteered for the RAF and entered Cosford on the 15th March 1940. Volunteering for Pilot training he first flew with 10 EFTS in January 1942. Posted to Rhodesia as part of the Empire Training Scheme he returned to the UK in August 1943. His log finishes about here, with the second log which would have recorded operational flying absent. Accompanying basic research supplied with the group from the family indicates that he flew operationally with 161 Special Duties Squadron which was responsible for SOE operations and supply drops over occupied Europe.
