AN UNUSUAL GOLD AND ENAMEL RED CROSS AWARD FOR 'WAR SERVICE'. A small gold cross pendnant with clear red enamel to the front, the reverse engraved 'War Service 1914-1919' hallmarked 9ct, Birmingham, 1918, maker J.W.T. for James Walter Tiptaft and Co Ltd. 3.08g. In presentation box 'From Whinney House'. With a note suggesting that this item belonged to Elsie Maude Leinster M.B.E. a Sister at Whinney House Hospital 1914-1919 as part of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.) No.1 V.A.D. Hospital Durham. Elsie Maud Leinster was awarded her M.B.E. in the 1918 Birthday Honours List in which she is noted as Quarter Master 1st Durham Auxillary Hospital.
