Albert Bartholomé (French, 1848 - 1928)
La fontaine (The Fountain)
Bronze, silvered patina
Signed 'Bartholomé'
Albert Bartholomé was a self-taught sculptor and painting. His most famous artwork is the Monument to the Dead at Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris, 1899. He is considered to be one of the great symbolist sculptors and won the Grand Prize for sculpture at the Exposition Universelle in 1900.
'La Fontaine,' was created in plaster by the sculptor in 1896 as a preparatory study for a marble to be exhibited at the Salon de la Société nationale des Beaux-Arts. His widow's collection includes one of the later recasts from 1928, and the Imperial Collection in Japan includes a marble version of this sculpture.
