Alexander Hoyles, Reflected Repetition Series, Digital, archival Giclée print on Hahnemühle photo rag
non editioned - though these particular prints are currently the only prints of those images (3)
Since 2016 Alexander has been walking daily with his camera as a meditative artistic practice and through that process has been creating a body of work documenting similarities, differences, changes and moments within both his local surroundings and the other cities he travels to. Light, shadow and shape and ephemera within the urban /built environment and the geometry between buildings, surfaces and street furniture form the core underpinnings of these works; in which Alexander looks for not only light but for moments of oddness, interaction and interplay - treating elements of the environment that'd usually go unacknowledged as the subject matter rather than the background. Part of this series was shown by The Modernist for their ILLUMINATE: Architecture & Light shows
Alexander Hoyles is a fine art photographer, film & image maker who relocated to Glasgow from Auckland (New Zealand) in 2018.
Graduating from The University of Auckland - Elam School of Fine Arts (BFA Hons) in 2010, Alexander has continued to make and exhibit sculptural and photographic work, whilst also working creatively within the film and advertising industries.
Much of Alexander’s work centers around creating carefully curated or crafted representations and re-presentations of existing moments and locations, freezing in time the subtle, the sublime and the beautiful aspects of the built and natural environment. He is interested in the balance and tension between the uncanniness and discomfort that inherently comes from taking a moment out of time, and the ability of that same process to capture the natural essence of things.
Alongside several bodies of personal work in current development, Alexander continues to create ongoing commercial and portraiture work, completing a number of commissions for individual artists, authors and performers, as well as working with a wide range of clients across the arts and culture sectors including Greater Govanhill Magazine, New Practice Architects, Scottish Contemporary Art Network, Impact Arts, WASPS, Thackray Museum of Medicine, Glasgow Sculpture Studios and many others.
