AN ELIZABETHAN "BLACKWORK" EMBROIDERY COIF (CAP)

circa 1580, now laid flat, worked with coils of berried foliage with spear-shaped leaves, 40cm x 23.5cm; and an Elizabethan stomacher worked in a geometric pattern with stylised Tudor roses, partly in gold
and silver thread, on a linen ground and now with a hessian backing, 33cm x 22.5cm (2)

Literature: The coif, or cap, is illustrated in colour in "Antique Needlework"by Lanto Synge first published in 1982, plate 10A.
